Welcome to the web site for the sculpture of the Virgin Mary that was  carved on site at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Seneca, South Carolina.

The sculptor, Eric Johnson, created this larger than life-size piece from two large blocks (over 5 ton) of white Colorado marble in 2001.

You are invited to come by and see the  completed sculpture at the church and you can also see the progression of the carving of Mary over the six months, by viewing its progress  on these pages by clicking on Photo Journal above.

**Note - The picture on the right was taken in April of 2002, when Eric returned to South Carolina to retrieve the first block of stone that had proved to be too soft to go outdoors and had to be replaced.
After he completed the Sculpture of Mary in July of 2001,with the replacement block of marble, this stone was placed in the weeds near the church parking lot and sat there for 9 months. She became known as "Mary of the Weeds."
When he returned to bring her home this year, he decided to re-carve her in a new design that he has been experimenting with, that will allow light to come through the stone. To follow the progress of this new sculpture, click on "Mary of Light" above.
