January 2001

Eric Johnson arrived at St. Paul's on January 8th
and began setting up his temporary studio
so he could begin carving the marble.

January 10, 2001  ~  Both large blocks of marble are moved into place and Eric is setting up the frame work of the shelter over them so he can begin sculpting in front of the church. The block of marble on the carving table will be the base and the first piece to be carved, the piece of marble to the right, will be Mary.

January 15th ~ Eric and Dick Potocnick, a member of the congregation who volunteered to lend a hand, inside the shelter, which is now covered with plastic sheeting. The side walls can be rolled up and down depending on the weather. In this photo, they are just beginning to cut the edges off of the block of stone that will be the base.

January 22nd ~ Eric, covered in marble dust, measuring the sides
of the base.

January 25th ~ cutting the base into a twelve sided configuration,
on a cold morning.
